Authors - Writing SegmentsWriting segmentsSegments are designed to cover a range of topics, nominating a level of interest, rather than just concentrating on one topic. This allows a person who is reading the site to discover more as they go, but also allows the school site to develop, and include more knowledge as people progress. In a school of any type, you would normally have a timetable or other means of covering a range of subjects, rather than say spending all of the first year doing mathematics and the whole second year history etc, similarly we want those enjoying the experience we offer to have varied curriculum, rather than reading a site equivalent to a very fat book. Deciding on what is in a segment is a chicken and egg problem do you use the articles that are written and available or do you identify a need and find people to write them. In most cases it will be a bit of both, possibly also writing some articles that are needed to complete the segment. The one thing to remember about segments is that you do not need to cover everything there is on a a topic, later segments can expand the knowledge further. Many article authors will provide a series of articles on a subject allowing the topic to be developed over time. The temptation is always to put too much in a segment or to go too deep in too many topics. Segments should recap briefly on similar ground covered before and expand the circle of knowledge. Segment authors agree the contents with the chairman of the advisory group, and work closely with him, this is necessary as one segment has to follow from another across segment authors. If you are interested in being a segment author then let the chairman know, and he will involve you as soon as he is able. |
